RespRelief Pump is a snap to assemble.

The steps for assembly of the RespRelief Pump are as follows.

  1. Open the box and remove the manual suction pump and all accessory parts from inside of the zipper lock bag packaging. Put the zipper lock bag aside for use at the time of disposal.
  2. Mount the Collection Canister with Cap to the Pump. Check for closed tight Canister to Cap and snug tight fit to the Pump.
  3. At this point perform a Basic Functional Test (refer to User Instructions) to check the Pump before use and before returning it for reuse. After you mount a collection jar with cap to the Pump, obstruct the connection port with your gloved thumb or palm and squeeze the handle to check for the vacuum. Additionally, attachment of a suction tube and flush, or prime with water ensures vacuum ability.
  4. Snugly connect the appropriate suction tube to the canister. Please note that the grey adaptor is a Universal French Catheter adapter fits all size French catheters, from adult to pediatric sizes. PalliativePros recommends using the 14 Fr catheter (without a control valve) and/or a Yankauer (without a control valve) as provided in this kit, for oral secretion removal.

The steps for use of the RespRelief Pump are as follows.

  1. Check the adjustable lever located on back of the Pump for correct setting of pressure for adult or pediatrics. It should be 100% for adult and 50% for pediatrics.
  2. Clear any obvious foreign substances from the patient’s airway by using a mouth swab.
  3. Prime tubing on the pump with a small amount of water from a cup or container available before oral suctioning to ensure function.
  4. Hold the pump with one hand while inserting and directing tubing into oral cavity with the other hand.
  5. Insert the suction tube into the back of the patient’s throat. DO NOT insert farther than you can see.
  6. Pull back the pump trigger handle, in a squeezing motion, and hold the squeeze for a few seconds to allow suctioning action to draw in fluids. Release and repeat. Multiple squeezes are the most effective.
  7. After the airway is cleared of oral secretions, it may be necessary to take repeated suctioning, or other steps to clear and maintain the airway.
